Allergy Q & A with Dr. Zekowski

What is an allergist/immunologist?
An allergist/immunologist is a physician who treats a wide variety of problems, including allergy to pollens, molds, dust mites, pets, foods, stinging insects and drugs. In addition, we treat chronic or recurrent conditions where allergy is not always identified, such as sinusitis, asthma, cough, hives, eczema and anaphylaxis. We are also trained to evaluate patients for immune deficiency.

Who should see an allergist/immunologist?
Anyone with the problems I just mentioned who is having a hard time getting symptoms under control, particularly asthmatics. I can also help patients understand whether they really have a food allergy and how to take proper precautions. Insect sting reactions that go beyond swelling of the site should be evaluated by an allergist.

How does an allergist diagnose allergic conditions?
It's not as simple as conducting a test and prescribing shots. In most cases, skin testing (our preferred method) is a nearly painless procedure. However, allergy test results are not simple black-and-white answers. They require interpretation in the context of a patient's medical history and physical examination. In cases of food allergy, challenging with the food in question in the clinic is sometimes necessary. Other diagnostic tools include lung function testing, and less commonly, x-ray, CT scans and a variety of blood tests.

Why did you decide to pursue immunology?
I started out in pediatrics, but I wanted more opportunity to help patients with chronic diseases improve their quality of life. While there isn't a cure for allergies, there is the possibility of seeing a previously restricted asthmatic patient run and play sports, and patients with severe dietary limitations realize that there are more foods they can safely eat.
