Breast Cancer Awareness

Did you know?

  • 54% of the breast cancers diagnosed within the Lakeview Health System were found by palpable mass (by self-exam or by a provider) for the years 2003-2006. (Source: Lakeview Hospital Tumor Registry)
  • 31% were found by an abnormal mammogram. (Source: Lakeview Hospital Tumor Registry)
  • Excluding cancer of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, accounting for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed in US women. (Source: American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Facts and Figures, 2005-2006)
  • A woman living in the US has a 13.2%, or 1 in 8, lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. (Source: American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Facts and Figures, 2005-2006)

Does mammography make a difference in breast cancer prevention?

  • Numerous randomized trials and population-based evaluations of screening mammography have clearly shown that early detection of breast cancer through mammography greatly improved treatment options, the chances for successful treatment, and survival. (Source: American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Facts and Figures, 2005-2006)

Did you know?

  • Lakeview Health System has digital mammography vs. analog mammography.

Why is that important to know?

  • Digital mammography takes an electronic image of the breast and stores it directly in a computer, allowing the recorded data to be enhanced, magnified, or manipulated for further evaluation. Film (analog) mammography units use film to both capture and display the image. The sensitivity of film (analog) mammography is somewhat limited, particularly in women with dense breasts (a population at higher risk for breast cancer). (Source: National Cancer Institute, DMIST Trial, NEJM Online, September 16, 2005).
